Every word has dignity, importance, worth, and a distinct individual personality. And treating every word properly means honouring, valuing, and giving it its due. Lacking care in the use of words leads to changes in the physical form as well as in the meanings and concepts of the words. Sometimes, micro features of pronunciation may make a huge difference, even in the words that seem simplest to us.

Pronunciation in Urdu, as in English and other languages, is crucial since it contributes to the beauty of the language itself. When Urdu words are uttered precisely, they sound pleasant, catchy, and melt in the ears. Yet, if the same words are pronounced improperly, they seem terrible. Pronunciation is like exquisite clothing that adorns and accentuates the features of the personality. The fact is that there are hundreds of words in Urdu in which the actual meaning of the word changes due to the difference in pronunciation. So, pronunciation is not only an external thing but also an internal entity that beautifies the words as well as retains their meaning.

Correct word pronunciation may prove to be a challenge even for advanced learners. Some students may still struggle to be understood even if they have mastered Urdu grammar. Being skilled in grammar is of little use to such students unless the teacher assists them in speaking words and phrases in a comprehensive manner. When learning a language, the helpful technique of “modeling” and “repetition,” may be applied so that the students may perceive its sound, and then replicate and rehearse the pronunciation.

It is unfortunate that speaking and listening abilities are generally not given much emphasis in Urdu language classes. Storytelling, speech, dialogue, loud reading, and proper technique and decorum to read poetry and prose are almost entirely neglected while teaching Urdu. As a result, we fall short of our duty to help our learners develop effective communication skills. Urdu is a combination of many different languages and it contains thousands of Arabic words. We all know that Arabic is the most systematic language in the world, thus the pronunciation of these ‘Urabic’ words may be learnt quite easily by classifying them according to their root-letters, patterns, textures, and sounds. In this regard, I’m also working on a dictionary for the benefit of Urdu learners.
